Gather Hear Alabama, our sixth tour, took place in December 2023.

Alabama, the home of the civil rights movement, and in that sense - the soul and essence of America. We set out with the intention of finding out whether a classical concert could bridge racial divides, and in the process, gain a deeper understanding of African American history and current life from the wonderful Alabamians met along the way.

Full blog posts and videos will be published later this year (2024), but for now, enjoy the blog post about York, an Alabama’s NPR news feature, and the photo carousel below.

Many locations where Sawada played are in majority Black communities. With that in mind, her set list features Black composers Florence Price, George Walker and William Grant Still. The pieces are paired with poetry by Alabama poets. She also has arrangements of African-American spirituals.

SPECIAL THANKS to InToto Creative Arts, our presenting partner;
This tour was made possible in part by a grant from Alabama State Council on the Arts.
